TI Methods Speaker Series: What's counted and what counts: Metrics in scholarly publishing (Michele Avissar-Whiting)
In this presentation, Dr. Michele Avissar-Whiting will discuss the ways in which journals, authors, and individual articles are metricized. Love them or hate them, metrics have been used to convey impact, interest, and status in academic publishing for decades, and the number and variety of different types of metrics continues to grow every few years. But how are these metrics derived and are they ever a good proxy for quality? This talk discusses the advantages and limitations of "classic" journal-level metrics like the impact factor as well as novel approaches to understanding quality at the article level.
